As the capital of the Costa del Sol, the city of Málaga is one of the main gateways for the traditional Spanish beach holiday. Málaga Airport receives around 10 million arrivals annually, mainly tourists travelling to popular resorts such as Marbella, Benalmadena and Fuengirola.

But Málaga is not just a place to pass through, it is also a destination in its own right. Combining the cosmopolitan feel of a city with the laid-back Spanish atmosphere, it is a great place to spend a few days relaxing, exploring and partying. Originally founded as Malaka around 770 BC, the city has experienced several upheavals over time with battles, sieges and coups. Today it has a population of more than half a million and receives around 1.5 million tourists each year.

A city break to Málaga can also seamlessly transition into a beach holiday as there are numerous beaches in the area. Playa de la Malagueta is one of the largest and is very close to the city, making it a popular place for locals and tourists alike to relax, exercise and play.

Málaga was also the birthplace of one of the world's most famous artists, Pablo Picasso. The house where he was born now serves as the Picasso Foundation and Birthplace Museum as a tribute to his life and work. The museum houses a collection of art by both Picasso and other contemporary artists and organizes regular exhibition programs.
