The Algarve, the southernmost part of Portugal, has been a popular destination for holidaymakers from all over the world since the 1960s. As the holder of the title of "sunniest region in Europe" with one of the warmest climates, it's obvious why!

With a population of around half a million permanent residents, many of the Algarve's tourists own holiday homes in the region and visit several times a year. The 150km stretch of coastline has developed into several resorts (accessible via Faro airport), each with something different to offer to suit almost every taste. Albufeira is known as the liveliest resort, with a range of bars and nightclubs, a water park and plenty of activities. It is also arguably one of the most visited. Portugal is known as a golfing paradise, and nowhere is this more the case than Vilamoura. As well as the town's four world-class golf courses, there is a chic marina for fancy dining and a relaxed nightlife.

The part of the Algarve featured in our poster image is Lagos, pronounced La Goosh. The town began life as a seafaring town and, despite its popularity with international tourists, has retained much of its original character. Visitors can stroll the cobbled streets, eat freshly caught seafood or marvel at the cliffs of Ponta da Piedade. This unique and dramatic part of the Portuguese coastline is made up of limestone arches, sea columns and hidden grottos that look simply stunning next to the deliciously turquoise Mediterranean Sea.
